Today we did a lot of knowledge testing. Sapphire and Harley are one away from moving on to the stage 5 knowledge questions! Cassie was really quick to complete the place value questions and Thomas demonstrated tidy tens for us.

Wednesday 30 May

Today Thomas and Harley got 100% in the hundreds square for the third day in the row! We revised the jumping to a tidy number strategy. Lily, Liam, Sammi, Harley and Sapphire were so quick with this! They are experts at it now. Here are some to try at home.

47 + _ = 93
66 + _ = 85
126 + _= 153

Cassie and Thomas did some special hundreds work and are getting very fast at recalling these facts.
Next week I hope that everyone will have finished their stage 4 knowledge sheets. 

Tuesday 29 May

Today we did some revision of the strategies we have been learning. We talked about tidy tens, up tens, place value and tidy numbers. Most of us are jumping with a tidy number. Sammi was so quick and got every question correct. Liam was very clever, suggesting different ways for us to solve problems. Tomorrow we will talk about tidy numbers some more because some of us still find them confusing!

Thursday 24 May

Today we did some revision. We also talked about our tidy numbers strategy which is still a bit tricky for some of us. Sammi and Liam were very accurate with this strategy. Lily caught on to this and she wasn't even here when were taught it! Please make sure that you are still practicing those knowledge questions from the sheet I gave to you. Harley and Thomas got 100 on the 100's square again!

Tuesday 22 May

Today we have been learning about the jumping up a tidy number and back a small number strategy. This is where we jump up a tidy number e.g. 46 + _ = 83, we would jump from 46 to 86 (a jump of 40), then we would jump back 3 to get to 83. So we take the 3 away from 40 to get our answer. Once again Harley and Sammi were really quick to pick this strategy up, and once Lily and Sapphire and Liam caught on they were quick too. We hope Casie is back soon! Thomas got 100 in his 100's square again!

Monday 21 May

Today we continued to look at the tidy numbers strategy. It is quite tricky because there are so many different ways we can use it. We know we either jump TO a tidy number like Sapphire, or we jump UP with a tidy number like Harley. Keep up the Basic Facts work! 

Wednesday 16 May

WOW! Thomas must have been struck by lightning, he was so amazing today. Thomas reached 100 in the hundreds square, then he was first finished with our maths maintenance. Well done Thomas you were amazing. Today we started working on the tidy numbers strategy. This is a big strategy and can be quite difficult. But once again Sammi and Harley caught on to this so quickly! We will be continuing working on this strategy all of next week. Tomorrow we don't have maths, we will be going to watch El Gregoe. Keep up the BF work, see you next week!

Tuesday 15 May

Good news, we are all improving our basic facts! Today we talked about a new strategy that we called up tens. This is where you jump forward or backwards by 10 if the number is close to 10 e.g. 57 + 8 = 57 + 10 = 67 - 2 = 65. Sapphire even started using a new strategy that Miss Moody hasn't even taught yet! We are all becoming very accurate when solving problems. Keep working on BF at home as well as place value. See you tomorrow!

Monday 14 May

Today we missed Lily at Monster Maths! Harley was the first one of us to reach 100 in her hundreds square! Awesome work Harley, you must have been doing lots of work at home! Sammi finished her stage 4 knowledge questions and is moving onto stage 5! I will test Cassie and Thomas on their knowledge to see how far they have come. Liam, Sapphire and Harley have things they can work on at home. Keep up the great work!

Thursday 10 May

Today we revised the tidy tens and the place value strategies. Most of us are pretty quick at these now! Harley was too quick for Miss Moody, she was solving the equations faster than Miss Moody could write them! AND she was doing them all in her head. We are pleased to have Sammi back, she is awesome at the Place Value strategy. Everyone's basic facts results improved today, especially Lily's. Thomas is getting very good at the tidy tens strategy and Liam and Cassie were accurate with their workings. Don't forget to keep doing your basic facts over the weekend!

Parents

Hi parents, all of the children are working very hard but we still need to improve our basic facts results! Please focus on one number a night. For example + 8, all of the numbers to 10 + 8. It is best to do the numbers out of order 8 + 6 =, 8 + 9 +, 8 + 3 =. These need to be recalled within 4 seconds - No counting on fingers!

Wednesday 9 May

Today Monster Maths was amazing! We finished working on the tidy tens strategy. This is where we split the number we are adding or subtracting to jump to a tidy ten like this......... 47 + 6 = 47 + 3 = 50, 50 + 3 = 53. First we jump to 50 because it is a tidy tens number, this means we have used 3 of the 6 we were adding. Next we use the remaining 3 to jump to 53. We have been working on this for a few days now because some of us found it pretty tricky but we find it easier to show our thinking by using a number line. Lily and Sammi were experts at this strategy.
Today we also started to talk about the Place Value strategy. This is where we add the tens and ones separately like this........ 52 + 24 = 50 + 20 = 70, 2 + 4 = 6, 70 + 6 = 76.
We all loved this strategy and we picked up on it so quickly! Harley, Sapphire and Cassie were racing to finish first. We are lucky to have Liam's clever thinking, he seems to be able to work out the new strategies before Miss Moody has even taught them!
I wonder if anyone can beat Harley's basic facts tomorrow?
